What the score means
- 0–6 (Low): Money worry is in normal range. Awareness practices keep it that way.
- 7–14 (Medium): Worth working on. Both practical (cashflow, debt structure, emergency fund) and psychological (cognitive defusion, scheduled worry windows) tools help.
- 15–21 (High): High burden. Financial therapy or CBT-based programs target this specifically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is money anxiety the same as poverty stress?
Related but distinct. Acute deprivation produces stress directly; money anxiety can persist even with adequate resources because it has cognitive and identity components.
Where do scripts and beliefs come from?
Klontz et al. (2011) describe four "money scripts": avoidance, worship, status, and vigilance. Most people learn theirs from family of origin before age 12 and operate them unconsciously.
